#1: TEST CO detector and batteries.
Tip #1: Pick a day each month to ‘test’ your Carbon Monoxide detector and its batteries to ensure that both are functioning properly. Replace old batteries with new ones if needed.
#2: Vacuum
Tip #2: Vacuum your CO detector with a vacuum that has an upholstery attachment to clean out any cobwebs, dust, or pet hair that may ‘clog’ the detector’s sensors or reduce the carbon monoxide detector’s effectiveness.
#3: Clean with an all purpose cleaner
Tip #3: Spray an all purpose cleaner onto a scrap of old t-shirt or rag and wipe down CO detector (paper towels may leave particles behind that would ‘clog’ sensors and reduce effectiveness).
Tip #4: Replace CO detectors every 5 years for safety purposes.
